It’s no secret that our health is strongly influenced by our environment. While we can’t completely avoid toxins, our bodies are incredibly wise and have remarkable detoxification abilities (thank you, liver!). By easing the burden on our systems and proactively embracing a low-tox lifestyle, we can genuinely enhance our overall health and vitality.
If you’ve been avoiding turning over your favourite cosmetic item for fear of the ingredients list—or if you’ve already started your low-tox journey but feel overwhelmed by conflicting information or deceptive “greenwashing” tactics—help is available.
Start where it matters – clean water.
While most of us are fortunate to have access to water that won’t make us acutely ill, tap water can still contain chlorine, fluoride, inorganic chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, dissolved solids and other impurities. A hard-working water filtration system will help clean the water of these major contaminants, improving the taste, smell and overall quality. Thankfully, there are options on the market now to suit most budgets and living situations.
Moving onto our plate
Our diet is a major source of exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and a range of additives—including colours, flavours, and preservatives—found in many processed foods. When it comes to fresh produce, one major contaminant is glyphosate: a non-selective systemic herbicide applied directly to plant foliage. It has been linked to gut health issues, interference with natural detoxification processes, and disruptions in mineral balance.
For those with the option, choosing organic or spray-free whole foods (often available at farmers’ markets) can significantly reduce the body’s exposure to this common chemical, along with many others. Annual lists released by the Environmental Working Group—such as the Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen—can help prioritise which produce is best sourced organically and which conventional options are safer to consume.
Into the bedroom…
We spend an average of 7–9 hours in our bedroom each day, so the health of this space is important. Bedding materials can harbour mould, dust mites, and toxic odours. Many foam mattresses, for example, are made from petroleum-based polyurethane and contain chemical adhesives and flame retardants, which can release harmful gases over time. A great alternative is a mattress made from organic latex, supported by materials like organic cotton and wool. These options provide comfort and support without exposing you to unnecessary chemicals.
Clean her up, buttercup
Most conventional cleaning products and air fresheners contain harsh chemicals—known irritants to the skin, eyes, and lungs. Luckily, many health-conscious brands are now available at health food stores and beyond, avoiding ingredients like bleach, ammonia, surfactants, and solvents. For any DIY-ers, bicarb soda and vinegar go a long way in keeping everything sparkling!
And lastly, take a deep breath in
Indoor air quality refers to the condition of the air inside buildings and structures, and it can have a profound impact on our health and wellbeing. Some simple ways to improve the air you breathe include investing in a vacuum with a HEPA filter (which effectively traps very fine dust, pollen, and pet dander—rather than just moving it around the airspace). These are especially valuable for those who experience allergies or asthma.
Next, do a maintenance check on the exhaust fans throughout the house—from the stovetop to the bathroom—to reduce fumes and moisture buildup. Other helpful tips include opening windows on warm days to let in fresh air and sunlight; choosing natural cleaning products; opting for low-tox furniture when investing in new pieces; leaving shoes at the door; and incorporating house plants, which can help reduce indoor air pollutants (some great options include Boston fern, bamboo palm, English ivy, rubber plant, and peace lily—just be mindful of pets and small children).
Like with everything, it’s progress over perfection!
There’s always more to say on this topic, but even small, intentional changes in these areas will positively impact your health, well-being, and vitality.
