When assessing a health case clinically, there is often a wide range of signs and symptoms appearing across different timelines. There may be several contributing factors and sometimes one or more diagnoses already received. The real challenge is identifying what truly sits at the root of the issue—beneath all the layers of complexity.

One functional test I frequently find extremely valuable in these situations is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA).

What is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis?

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a laboratory test that measures essential minerals and toxic elements stored within a small hair sample. Because hair grows gradually, the test provides a retrospective view of mineral and toxic element exposure over the previous 2–3 months, offering a useful timeline of what may be happening in the body.

The test is reliable, non-invasive, and simple to perform, making it particularly suitable for children.

Why HTMA is Ideal for Children

Many diagnostic tests can feel stressful or uncomfortable for kids, but HTMA is different. The test requires only a hair sample, making it quick, simple to collect, completely non-invasive, and stress-free for young children. Because of this, HTMA can be a practical tool when investigating health concerns in kids and may also be useful for ongoing monitoring when needed.

Why Minerals Matter for Health

Essential minerals support hundreds of biological processes in the body, including energy production, brain development, nervous system regulation, immune function, and detoxification pathways. When minerals become deficient, excessive, or imbalanced, the body may struggle to function optimally.

Toxic elements can also interfere with nutrient function and disrupt normal physiology, sometimes contributing to a range of symptoms.

Environmental Exposure is More Common Than We Think

Without being alarmist, exposure to environmental toxins is common. Sources may include air, water, food, personal care products, medications, dental restorations, cookware, and household items.

The body does have natural detoxification systems—including the liver, gut, skin, lymphatic system and kidneys—but when exposure is ongoing or excessive, accumulation can occur over time.

When Might HTMA Be Helpful?

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis may be clinically relevant when symptoms such as persistent fatigue, low mood, behavioural concerns, hyperactivity, learning difficulties, digestive issues, malabsorption, poor gut health, or known toxin exposure in the child or parent are present.

In some cases, testing can help identify nutritional imbalances or toxic burdens that may otherwise be overlooked.

Removing the Guesswork from Health Investigations

All functional testing has limits, but HTMA can help reduce some of the guesswork when investigating complex or persistent symptoms. For some individuals, it can provide an important missing piece of the puzzle when working toward improved health and well-being.
